Family Members in the Insurance Business
By: Jason Cunningham
Every family has probably one person in the
insurance business. If you look hard enough at the family reunion, rest assure
there is one there. The proper way to deal with family members in the insurance
industry can be easily explained.
Your cousin or maybe your uncle is involved
in the insurance industry. The stigma still sticks that insurance professionals
are like used car salespeople. They are wolves looking for the next sheep to
slaughter. This is a wild exaggeration, but some people feel uncomfortable
around these individuals. It could have been something that happened in their
past or they know something will be bought if asked.
It is actually good to have a family
member in the insurance industry. You may not want them writing insurance
on you, but they are more inclined to give you information. Great, now every
insurance professional in the U.S. and Canada will be writing me an e-mail over
that statement. Sometimes it is important to have someone you trust, to give you
answers about simple or complex issues concerning insurance. Maybe you do not
understand disability insurance and do not see the need for it. You may think your home
is not insured for the proper amount. Relatives are usually less
abrasive about giving you real advice than a stranger trying to get a sale. They
also may know your particular situation better than most. One thing you must
keep in mind, insurance professionals often feel guilty if you die, or become
disabled and have no money coming in, especially if it is a family member.
You may have a pushy insurance agent in the
family. This is the secret for dealing with them. Let them talk to you. Why would we
say something like that? Their advice might save your family from despair in times of
sorrow or a disability. Just thank them for the information, and they will know
there is no sale there. Then you can continue to enjoy the family reunion. No
one is saying you should not do business with your family. That decision is
entirely up to you.
