God and Financial Planning
By: Jason Cunningham
More financial planners are including Church
offering, while doing planning. Advisors are becoming more aware of how to
structure their client's benevolence, so that they see added benefit, for
example more giving. Your client's relationship with their faith may lead them
to chose investments that are "socially responsible."
Many Christians and other religions believe
in tithing. People give money, in a form of an offering to God . This is a very
important event, in the lives of those, who are true to their faith. It
represents a time where they thank God for all that has been given unto them.
As a financial or advisor you must take
Church giving in consideration when warranted. Some people may be reluctant to
share what they give, because it is personal to them. However it may
advantageous for them to supply you with this information. Your analysis may
allow them to pay less taxes, and at the same time, increase their giving to
Church or their place of worship.
Some people may be offended by investing in
stocks that sell alcohol, tobacco, or birth control. It is important to
accommodate your clients with recommendation that coincide with their beliefs.
There are several mutual funds labeled "socially responsible" which invest in
companies that promote social good.
How you treat your client and respect their
faith can lead to a lasting relationship. Find out if your client would like you
to consider their Church benevolence in their financial plan. Always be
conscious, that the faith is always a serious topic, and protect your
client's interest at all cost.
