HMO Article

By: Jason Cunningham

HMO is short for Health Maintenance Organization.  This network of healthcare providers are supposed to manage your personal health through a gatekeeper. Many people choose this plan because it is more affordable than others.

An HMO allows you certain privileges, including  access to doctors in their network. You have a gatekeeper, who is a doctor or maybe a nurse practitioner that works on your case. Your underlying costs, when going to a HMO provider are cheaper, because the insurance company has negotiated prices with your doctor or healthcare provider.

There is some things people do not like about HMOs. If there is a procedure that you feel will add quality to your life, you need to make sure,  it can be approved. There is often not much leniency with an HMO, in regards to what is covered. Also, if you need to visit a specialist, be mindful that your gatekeeper must approve that appointment before you visit that doctor. Otherwise, your visit to the specialist, may cause you to flip the entire bill.

The nature of the HMO may sound restrictive. It offers many services including mammograms, check-ups, and prostrate exams. However its job is to prevent illness through preventative care and keep your healthcare costs down.
