The Insurance Quotes Game
By: Jason Cunningham
Remember calling for your first insurance quote, and hearing
"What is your date of birth, okay, $10 a month for $30,000 face amount of
coverage, I will stop by to write the application on Tuesday to at 4pm." I know
what you said to the agent was negated but did you miss something other that.
The agent never asked about your height or weight or any medications you might
be currently taking. This is not a new game, but an old practice. For example, a
male who is 5'10, 300 lbs is not select preferred for term life insurance, I do
not care what company you attempt to apply for. There are also certain
medications such as Prozac for clinical depression that will keep you from being
preferred. The Prozac quote is a true story, someone told me another agent
quoted them preferred. There are a few agents in this country that will
quote a person preferred and they know they are not. It is a disgraceful
practice that should not be tolerated.
However we still see this practice used often in group
insurance. Agents will give you the best quote available for group health
insurance based on your number of employees. You decide the quote is great, you
tell any other brokers or agents that contact you, your decision is final.
You fill out the applications for the group and you feel good about what you
have done. You tell your employees about the great rates, and three days later
you receive a call from the agent saying your rates have doubled based upon your
employees' medications and health conditions. You don't what to start the
process over, you are mad, but decide to go with the plan. The same thing
happens to the 300 lbs man. It is all about getting you to fill out the
applications to make you fill committed.
In conclusion, the "insurance quotes game" is an ugly game of
charades played by a few in the insurance professionals. Do your research, find
out how your height and weight and the medications you may take, can influence
insurance quotes you receive from agents.
