Insurance and Ministers
By: Jason Cunningham
Ask yourself, does your minister have
adequate, insurance protection? As churches, synagogues, mosque, etc., continue
to grow, these entities tend to take on more debt obligations including building
schools, nurseries, buildings, and other additions. But before your minister
retires, steps need to be made, so that your place of worship and the minister
and his or her family is taken care of.
(We apologize in advance, if the word minister offends anyone's
religion.")
Life insurance is important to ministers for
two reasons. One, the minister's family should be allowed to go on living, the
same lifestyle as before, when the minister passes away. Many people would
agree, that this is fair, because the minister and his family had to be gracious
host to those in the congregation. Also the church or place of
worship does not want to be stuck with enormous debt associated with unpaid
buildings, schools, and land they may have purchased during the minister's life.
Disability Insurance should also be
considered for your minister. If your minister becomes sick or disabled,
you probably would prefer to have him or her receive a paycheck from the
insurance company, instead of a full paycheck from your place of worship. Today,
some churches or places of worship find themselves paying two ministers because
of a disability.
Disability Insurance is health insurance, but
now let us focus on long term care insurance and a health plan for doctor and
hospital visits. Some churches are large enough to have group health insurance,
however smaller churches might not have this luxury. Choose a health insurance plan that
is in your minister's best interest. If he or she is married, consider maternity
coverage if they are planning on having more children. We all want the leader of
the church to be healthy, so make sure he or she gets adequate coverage.
Long term care insurance is a good way to reward your minister for their
services. It is important if your church is going to purchase it, do it when
your minister is healthy.
This article cannot focus on every area to
cover, when deciding to purchase insurance on your minister. However it was
written, so that you may think about the possible holes in your minister's
insurance portfolio. From Life, Disability, Health, to Long Term Care Insurance,
it is important to look at each individually, when making an informed decision
about buying any of the products for your minister.
