Socially Responsible Mutual Funds

By: Financial Shopper Network

Some mutual funds are geared towards investing in companies that are socially responsible. These funds stick to the fundamental core of their asset class, while working with stocks that meet their objective. Often these funds will not invest in companies that do controversial procedures such as abortion.

There are fund families including Ariel and Calvert that stick,  strictly to investing in "socially responsible stocks." You will not find any of their stocks, in their mutual  funds selling tobacco, alcohol, promoting sex, or abortion.  Mutual Funds that are "socially responsible" are usually pure in their investment class, whether large or small cap. You can find the latest published,  make-up of the stocks in the Ariel or Calvert fund on CNN, Morningstar, or Yahoo Finance.

Why choosing a "socially responsible mutual fund" may be important to you? Some people feel strong in their moral convictions. They want to know where their money is going. It is understandable why some people do not want to profit from companies that sell alcohol or manufacture condoms. This is their prerogative to feel this way, and this request should be honored.

The world of investing should promote diversity and inclusion. Not all people want to invest in the same types of companies. It is important to consider "socially responsible mutual funds" if some stocks do not jive with any of your moral beliefs.
