Understanding Why Insurance Agents are Business Owners!
By Jason Cunningham (11-15-06)
Each insurance agent is a business owner, regardless of
whether a captive or independent agent. Unlike most professionals, an insurance
agent must maintain a positive image in the community and find marketing
opportunities, in order to increase revenues.
It is the job of each insurance agent to promote their practice
just as any corporation. On a daily basis, you are called upon to leverage your
marketing skills to further penetrate the insurance market. Also, there
are certain sales projections that are evaluated on a weekly, monthly,
quarterly, or annual basis. If your target market changes, most insurance agents
find this a good time to change their marketing plan.
On average, those who prosper in the insurance industry
seem to possess these three qualities:
1. They understand their time is very valuable; so, each day's activities are
planned a week in advance.
2. These individuals are great students of attention. The elite agents know the
policy backwards and forward and how to communicate this information to clients
and prospects.
3. They do not get bothered by not getting a sale. Their business is so
lucrative that there is no reason to waste time with individuals who are
more concerned with getting free information than getting the proper insurance
coverage.
A career in the insurance industry is like no other. You
have to possess the necessary discipline and marketing ability to make a
comfortable living. Otherwise, you might want to consider being a financial
writer.
