Who Cares about Johnny Damon's Return to Boston?

By: Jason Cunningham (5/2/2006)

Yesterday, New York Yankee Johnny Damon played his first game in Boston since leaving the Red Sox last season. A lot of sports fans and writers made a big deal of Damon versus his former teammates. However, it is the Yankees versus the Red Sox; no cheesy storyline can trump the ultimate rivalry in baseball.

Johnny Damon is back in Boston. Who is excited? If you are not jumping up and down, then you are not alone. It is not like Damon wished his form team ill, or he is such a bad buy that must watch him. I do not watch the Yankees play, because Damon is on the team.

I guess people need a story to follow. Besides, it is early in the baseball season, and the "National Pastime" has to compete with the NBA Playoffs. The Yankees versus the Red Sox is the baseball equivalent of the NFL storied rivalry between the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers. You just do not get a better headline than the New Yankees against the Boston Rex Sox, other than Ali versus Frazier.
